Berat in Albania — a town of thousand windows

Another unforgettable place my family visited in Albania is Berat, a town of thousand windows. Many call it that because of the even rows of windows glancing at you from nearly identical white houses, which definitely makes quite a sight greeting you when you enter the town. However, not only are those “eyes” impressive, but also the sheer location of the town.

Berat is surrounded by mountains and hills and right across it runs the River Osum, splitting it into two parts and adding a picturesque bridge to the general attractiveness of the place. The true heart attracting visitors is Kalaja, which covers the old town center situated on the castle hill, and the part I present in the below photos.

Kalaja is definitely not a dream attraction for children though, just warning you guys, as it takes quite a lot of time and effort to climb it, and the truth of the matter is that kids usually prefer bathing in the sea when on holidays. So, no, our kids were not the happiest on earth while reaching the top, but once on the top, all sweat and tears got forgotten (I mean we parents forgot it all, ha ha!).

What I’ll remember about the town is the lack of perfection, which I liked a lot. Most European old towns of some historical, cultural significance are so… polished, neat and tidy, but Berat allows some spontaneity, some wildness. I hope the photos selected by me capture my impression of the place!
