Career Optimisation

Landing a Job can be quite the journey in Nigeria. Some even say the country is so rough, they would rather just leave as in “jakpaa”. Others think it’s possible to land a job in this country but it would just be twice as hard as would be anywhere else. Some people are of the opinion that there are no Jobs at all. We began Career Concave by taking these opinions from our participants and It appeared that most had simply given up achieving their dreams in this country. Do you agree with these people? Well if you do, journey with me through this report as I hopefully change your perception of the way Youlead International has changed the perception of some participants of Career Concave.

The first session anchored by Mr. Martins Iyekekpolor founder of Youlead International and Proclaim Digital Hub, took the participants on a journey through ‘Time Management’ and ‘Your Professional Identity’. We all have varying definitions of what Time-Management is; it could be how you’ve spent your time, proper scheduling, or no scheduling at all(some of us are legends like that). Mr. Martins however expressed that in life we give our time in exchange for everything else, and our career is one of those things. It is therefore only right that you build a life with that thing you give your time to. Hence mapping out your career in timelines is an excellent way to start. Dream big, but start small; big dreams are beautiful but sometimes they seem so unreachable. By breaking your big into smaller achievable sections using timelines as checkpoints, you can watch yourself slowly grow into those dreams of yours.

Fit in before you stand out”

With day 2 of Career Concave came the discussion on mindsets. Yes, that’s right, a discussion, not a seminar. All sessions in this program were interactive, everyone was given room to express their opinions, ideas, and concerns. Your mindset could be how you view the world and situations in general. Are you team ‘I can’t do it’ or team ‘I can’t do it yet’. It may not seem like much but makes a lot of difference in the end. That you do not have a job now does not mean you will never have one. But it is all about your mindset. The mindset you carry says a lot about how you tackle situations and respond to them. We often measure success by general standards. Yes, we all want a nice big house with a nice car, and lots of money to spare. But is that what success is? It is very possible to have all that and still feel like something is missing.

So, what is success to you? It could be something really simple but could mean the world to you. Understanding your definition of success is the first step to achieving it.

Now, what is job-hunting, without a good CV or resume to hunt with or even a place to hunt? On day 3, Martins walked the participants through, LinkedIn optimization, CV, cover letter, and resume writing. At the end of the session, seven participants were gifted a one-year paid access to EnhanceCV, a platform for creating professional CVs, Resumes, and Cover letters.

Who are your people, and what is your network like? Do you have any? We spend so much time sending tons of applications for jobs that aren’t actually available to us. some times they are, but our application is all wrong. Oftentimes when the result is wrong or unfavorable, it’s because the process was wrong. Do you think there’s something wrong with your application process? Do employers see you as employable? Nothing is beyond your reach, not even that job you want. You just need to know how to get it. Can you tell your story?

The final day of Career Concave 1.0 was focused on networking. Putting yourself out there is very vital. There is a wide array of opportunities out there and you can’t access them all by hiding behind your CV. Put yourself out there and tell your story.

At the end of the session, the participants were asked again what their take on succeeding in Nigeria was and a lot of responses had been re-evaluated. With optimized CVs and LinkedIn accounts, and also a bit more clarity on their individual personalities. These people are better equipped to go for their desired jobs and careers. Reports from participants also show that they found each session relevant to the development of their careers.

There are clearly o lot of reasons why you might not have a job or hate the one that you have. And Nigeria might not necessarily be one of those reasons. You could spend years in the wrong career, more years hating it, and more years regretting it just because you lacked understanding of your personality and therefore did not even know what career was right for you. You could be applying to the wrong jobs with the right CV or applying to the right ones with the wrong CV. None of these is Nigeria’s fault.

Yes, it’s tough in Nigeria, but you’re a Nigerian so you’re tough. That’s the right mindset. You don’t have a job ‘yet’, you haven’t found the right career path ‘yet’, but you will.
