First day of Junior Phase!

Today I biked to my first day at Grace Hopper Academy in the Financial District in Manhattan! It was my first time biking over the Brooklyn Bridge in many years so the nervous energy of starting bootcamp paralleled my feelings of wondering if I was fit enough to get over the bridge! Guess what, I had to walk my (single speed) bike up the first half, I was so out of shape! (It was also very windy…)

Catching my breath at 9 AM

My first day at GH consisted of orientation, then a lecture on Abstract Data Types and Data Structures. It was a good overview in understanding how the computer actually processes and stores information and planting ideas of the cost vs. benefit of different data structures (linked list vs. array). The workshop was a little tricky in trying to implement a simulation of a linked list by writing constructor functions, but I don’t feel too worried as it’s our first day and we’re all still trying to get our bearings. Honestly, the hardest part of my day was biking over the Brooklyn Bridge.

On my way back home I made it over the bridge without walking it, but slow joggers were still passing me! hahahha. I am confident that my strength will improve over the course of the bootcamp.

Pausing on my way back at 7 PM

Also, I love Fullstack Academy because they have reusable cups available at the water cooler (that students are responsible for cleaning) in order to help reduce their carbon footprint. It’s these little things that make me feel that I might be among kindred spirits — there is significance in the seemingly insignificant!
