Good Vibes on a Wine Safari Tour

My son and I met a retired animal actor

My son and I have explored almost every nook in the five-mile radius from our home — and, quite frankly, I’m getting tired of our zip code.

We’ve gone to every indoor playground, the pet store and toy store, a tiny aquarium, music store, library, The Disney Store at the mall, a nature preserve tucked into a residential neighborhood, and every park in our zip code.

It feels like there’s nothing new to explore.

My wife has never said I can’t take our son further than five miles from our home. But I don’t think she trusts me because every time I plan a father-son adventure that’s over five miles, she always wants to come with us.

But today, with my wife’s consent, we’re on the freeway going 53 miles, leaving our zip code on a road trip like Thelma and Louise.

Our destination: A wine safari tour at a ranch in Malibu, home of movie stars. It feels as if this trip will set a precedence for the future like a landmark Supreme Court case.

We will embark on longer adventures.

Hiking at Yosemite National Park.

A train trip from Los Angeles to Seattle.

Heck, we might become digital nomads.

My window is rolled down. I feel the wind blowing a cool breeze in my face and my son and I are hurtling with happiness on the 101 Freeway to go and see exotic, wild animals.

We pull into the large dirt parking lot off Mulholland Road to Saddlerock Ranch, and we enjoy the air-conditioned trailer portable toilets before heading over to the gift shop.

This is Malibu, folks, and my eight-year-old son loves the fancy restroom.

Moments later, we climb aboard a customized jeep with tiered seats, and our tour guide quizzes us to find out who has traveled the farthest distance.

It’s two days after Christmas, and the winners are from Hong Kong, China. Second place goes to New York. Third place to a family from Nebraska.
