Erika Foster is one tough detective

Foster is one determined woman. As an immigrant from Slovakia who came to Britain as a nanny, she knows from personal experience that most Britains think immigrants are disposable. That’s why she is so determined to catch killers.

Though Erika’s unerring gut instincts capture killers, her methods rankle her superiors. She’s had to claw her way through police politics and when she doesn’t get the support she needs, she follows up on leads anyway.

She doesn’t go AWOL. When she’s in place, she calls in her location and informs them of the research she has uncovered. She learned this attention to protocol the hard way, when her husband was killed in a raid.

Her only vice is drinking too much coffee, but since it’s from Starbuck’s and she buys enough for the team (along with donuts), I can’t fault her.

One serial killer’s story was so compelling I wanted them to get away with the crimes, but not if it meant I’d lose Erika.

Bryndza renders each character so vividly I feel like I’ve met them. He describes modern day London so well, I can almost smell the garbage in the dustbins.

Bryndza has his own style, but when he describes landscapes, I’m reminded of Thomas Hardy who trained as an architect. Pay attention to his descriptions, whether they are in a shopping mall or at a dive bar, they are filled with clues.

I realize I’ve spoken in generalities, but each book is plotted so tightly, I might give away a clue.
