Decision fatigue in laptop selection

All in all guide for laptop buying

It is totally okay to have a dilemma regarding the laptop selection, you are not alone. Almost everyone faces the situation. The Swiss author Rolf Dobelli calls it decision fatigue, we have too many options to decide and there we tend to play safe.

This article will help you out in all aspects and make the laptop selection process smooth.

We have a wide variety of laptops Macbook from Apple, Chromebook from Google, Galaxy Book from Samsung, professional and business laptops from Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, etc…

MacBook(macOS) is like owning an Audi car, the luxury and comfort come with their own cost of maintenance. Chromebook(ChromeOS) is good for lite usage especially if you gonna do office work and online classes. All other laptops will support all OS, there come to varied budget options with different specifications.

Diet plan: 8 GB
Preferred plan: 16 GB

Believing you are gonna use the laptop for next 3 to 5 years, over the next half-decade lot of things are gonna change starting from Video quality to 6G network introduction. Thus having an 8 GB RAM is a must to stick with the tech changes, having 16 GB is best though. DDR4 is the latest, efficient, and more common version of RAM available in the market.

Note: While choosing a diet plan, prefer 8 GB in a single slot with expandable options for the future.

HDD
Diet plan: 512 GB
Preferred plan: 1 TB

HDD(Hard Disk Drive) acts mechanically to fetch the data requested by the CPU, most of the time it will be connected using SATA(Serial ATA) interface.

SSD
Diet plan: 256 GB
Preferred plan: 512 GB

SSD(Solid State Drive) is faster, data are stored as a non-volatile flash memory. It doesn’t have any moving parts. SSD comes in different flavors,

Note: SSD with SATA is not a good option, SATA is slow. SSD with NVMe is best

Intel
Intel provides 4 main categories of CPU processors (i3, i5, i7, i9), prefer to buy 9th generation or above. Each generation is better than the previous one, with more optimized performance.

Each processor has its targeted audience
i3 → Office work alone (Read and write an email, video calling)
i5 → Decent performance with good support for multitasking
i7 → High-performance processor
i9 → Ideal for multimedia content creators, little expensive

Each processor name will be suffixed with a few alphabets,
the code represents are

AMD
AMD has proved its name, its processors are a little cheaper and have good usage of multi-core environments. Ryzen series is in competition with intel (Ryzen 5 ~= i5), and they are doing significantly better in terms of graphics.

Diet plan: 2 GB
Preferred plan: 4 GB

2 GB of diet plan is more than enough for normal usage. If you are gonna run some specific scientific applications or gaming, go for 4 GB of Nvidia graphics.

GPU can either be dedicated or integrated, dedicated GPU is ideal for gaming whereas integrated GPU is suitable for scientific applications. The differences are too minimal though.

Choose the one with at least 4–5 hours of working time.

Unless you are having design-specific work, try to skip touch screens. (It's my personal recommendation, you can decide based on your personal experience)

Keyboard: Backlit keyboards will be handy if you are gonna work in dim light. Recommended.

Mouse: Synaptics touch based on the personal preference

Webcam: Must have 720px, recent Windows 11 revealed that webcam is a must-have feature for laptops from 2023

USB: Having at least 1 USB with a 3.1 version is good

Wish you will get the best laptop at an affordable price that fulfills your need 😇. Hope you have learned at least one tip from this article 👏
