Being a journalist is becoming more dangerous and so World Press Freedom Day (celebrated on Tuesday 3rd May) and the UNESCO International Press Freedom conference, held in Uruguay this week, couldn’t be more important

293 journalists were known to be imprisoned according to the CPJ (Committee to Protect Journalists) last year, an increase of 15 since 2020

China had imprisoned the most of these (50), followed by Myanmar (26), Egypt (25), Vietnam (23) and Belarus (19)

On top of this, the CPJ estimate a further 24 were killed in 2021, although UNESCO believes this could be as high as 55

Although this is, in fact, a decrease since a peak in 2012 of 147 deaths worldwide

This comes at a time where trust in news media is particularly varied:

And these trends may have been impacted by the move to receiving news through social media

In 2019, for example, 55% of American adults received their news “often” or “sometimes” through social media, while 49% of people in the UK used social media to consume their news. Of these:
