What About Service Dogs?

Service dogs are equivalent to medical equipment often used to mitigate the symptoms or abnormalities of a disability. Examples of disabilities that could benefit from a service dog include, but not limited to, seizures, hard of hearing (HoH), visually impaired, autism, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD/C-PTSD), anxiety, and more.

There are a lot of misconceptions about how people believe they are allowed to interact with service dogs. As a disabled person with a service dog, I desire to help alleviate some of the confusion that surrounds this topic.

The first question, Is that dog a service animal required because of a disability?

The second question, what task is the dog trained to perform?

If a dog is disruptive, the business has the right to ask the owner to leave. A service dog is to be housebroken and well-mannered to have public access rights. Dogs are like humans; they are not always perfect. A good handler will correct their dog if they are out of line.

Miniature horses are also given public access rights if they meet the same requirements as service dogs.

Service dogs in training (SDiT) are also legally protected in some of these states. As tempting as it may be, leave the service animals alone.

While you may want to bring your pet or emotional support animal everywhere, please don’t. Leave Spot at home.
