How do you become a legend ?

As if I knew dear Felix, as if I knew.

What first came to my mind was the fact that it is definitely not something you can control. Forget telling your career councillor “I want to become a legend”, it might lack a bit of convincing.

Then I remembered the simple definition of a myth that I used to teach my senior students.

It is thus a story made of two types of elements : the historical events, the ones that are proven to have taken place, and the legendary elements, those build through words-of-mouth given the oral aspect of the story.

The oral dimension and transmission is a key factor in building or, as it is the case here, becoming a legend.

In that sense, there is only one side of your personal legend that you can control, it is the historical events, the actions you will undertake, the real events you will be reminded for. If we take Kobe Bryant, as Felix suggested, it would be his consistency in training that led him to become NBA champion 5 times and a 4 time NBA All Stars Game MVP for instance. That’s the most realistic part, the numbers.

Then comes the legendary dimension and there’s not much you can control about it as it stems from the oral side of how a legend is built. It is how people will react to your actions and behaviours and how you will impact their lives. So of course, at the beginning you can decide on how you will impact their lives but then when the legend arises, you have such an impact that you couldn’t imagine it to happen.

Yet, as this suggests, there is a third aspect to building your personal legend and it resides in the last part of the quote :

In other words, you cannot become a legend without a community of cheerleaders who believe in the same values and share your vision.

This might actually be the longest process of it all as building a community takes time.

And what is the best way to do it ?

By creating a trust worthy relationship with them and making your business all about them. Thus, building your legend as an entrepreneur is not only about your numbers, your results, it is about your ethics, how you behave and how many people you will inspire.

To become a legend you can only aim at doing your best to inspire people everyday and hope that it’s where it will lead you.

And that’s what creating content is all about.
