Originally, the brand referred to a piece of ‘burning wood.’ The use of branding livestock is much older than the word. Stone Age cave paintings suggest that early man marked cattle with symbols drawn with paint and tar. 4000 years ago, Egyptian funeral monuments depict branded cattle.

During this time, brands were used to identify goods. Pottery makers from China, Mesopotamia, India, Greece, Rome, and Egypt used different engravings to identify not only who made the pottery goods but also what type of materials used and where they were produced.

Watermarks as a tool of branding emerged during the medieval period as a way of paper makers, printing houses, artist guilds to distinguished their products and property. During the Renaissance, artists like Michelangelo introduced a new type of branding by signing their names to their works, rather than using symbols.

Two centuries later, during the Industrial Revolution, a new type of branding was born and it was known as mass branding which aimed to solve a new business challenge for consumers buying local products from local merchants.

In the late nineteenth century, companies had invested so much in branding that they needed a way to protect those investments from competitors. Therefore, in 1875, an act was passed known as the ‘Trade Marks Registration Act.
