Alwar Is The Most Beautiful Secret Of Rajasthan

When anyone says Rajasthan, Iguarantee the first names that pop in your mind are Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer. Yes, may be a few others but have you ever heard of Alwar? Probably not.

Living in Gurgaon, Haryana from the past two years, I and my husband are always on the lookout for quick weekend getaways. Gurgaon is roughly 45 kilometers away from Delhi, the capital of India.

The entire north belt of our country is rich in culture, history and with that comes a lot of historically important and beautiful places. Alwar is one such gem that not many know of.

Dating way back to 1000 AD, Alwar was primarily ruled by different clans of Rajputs. Great Hindu King Hemu who was born in a village in Alwar became the last Hindu emperor of India after defeating Akbar’s Mughal forces in the Battle of Delhi.

The City Palace built at the end of the 17th century is a fine example of the Rajput-Islamic architecture.

Rajasthan by default is a highly tourist populated state of India. At any point of time, season, date you will find most of the tourist destinations jam packed.

Luckily, Alwar being a rather unexplored, and lesser known destination has still managed to maintain its original charm. We visited the city in the peak winters of India sometime late November, and the place was empty. Other than a few locals visiting on the weekend, there were just us.

It was kind of perfect. We could immerse ourselves in the history, in the beauty of the palace without being disturbed by anybody. The pictures are a living proof of our time there.

The drive from Gurgaon to Alwar is just over 2 hours. The city is at a close distance of 125 kilometers which makes it the perfect weekend destination. I highly recommend spending two to three days here. Reason being, there are a lot of tourist destinations in and around Alwar.

Take for instance, the Sariska National Park is just 30 minutes from the city. Here you can see the great Indian Tigers in their natural habitat.

There is also SiliSerh Lake which is a property that instantly takes you away from the dessert and into an oasis of beauty.
