The Apocalyptic Movie Scenario of a Rubbish Removalist

Do you like horror movies? What about apocalyptic ones? I personally prefer the latter. There is something fascinating to experience the feeling that we are so small before the power of nature and other forces in the universe.

So here is where our conversation started. There are so many movies about apocalyptic events. It doesn’t matter if we speak about climate change (new ice age or extreme heat), nuclear winter, enormous asteroids, aliens or even an artificially created virus — we watched them all. I tried to think of such an event that has not been used in a movie plot. It’s a hard job. Changing the magnetic poles of the earth, giant tornadoes or waves, earthquakes, even black holes took their places in one or more such movies. What my friend said about this was: “We are always looking for the enemy outside. It’s easier to stand together against some kind of outer power than to see our own mistakes.”

There is a lot of truth in his words. In these movies the”good” people are always fighting against the bad nature, the evil aliens, corrupted politics, terrorist organisations or even vengeful doctors. It’s understandable. War and fight are in humans’ blood. Although the primal human emotion is fear, when we face a treat we have a choice. Some of us run and some stand and fight. If we have a common enemy, we unite and find the strength, sometimes even the reckless courage to confront it. Does it leads us to a happy end? End — yes, happy, define “happy”. There are enough examples in human history. Every world war can be called apocalypse itself. Actually the most realistic scenario for a future apocalyptic movie is happening right now, just before our eyes. It might not be so exciting as to be turned into a movie, but it will probably end up in a way that will be filmed many times if movie industry still exists after the curtain falls.

My friend’s point of view: As a person who works in the rubbish industry, he can say (from a first hand experience) this is a problem that cannot be neglected. We are so good in producing waste that the only thing we need to do to force “the apocalypse” is sit tight, keep calm, do nothing and just wait. Nature has its defenses and one day it will strike back. How? Here we can simply play Russian roulette. Most if not all of the stories described in movies can become real, or at least partly real.

● Air pollution can cause significant climate changes

● Water pollution can be the reason for mass plant deaths and starvation

● Pollution with certain hazardous chemical can lead to mutation of bacteria and viruses

● We even create waste in space so imagine that out junk makes some distant civilization angry

And the list of possible rubbish-apocalypse scenarios is endless.

What are we going to do then? Stand together and raise our voices against … who? The nature? Big bad evil aliens? Is this movie going to end with a happy end? The future holds this card. But we create the future today and if we don’t want to play a role in an apocalyptic movie, we just can’t keep pretending that there is no problem. We will bury our civilization in waste. Are we so blind or selfish that we don’t see that? We are so advanced as a civilization that we can create artificial intelligence which can destroy us eventually (Skynet is not a science fiction any more). We can (literally) build mountains, touch the stars, see across space. It just can’t be so hard for us to find solution to the problems that close to us. It will be nice to know that waste apocalypse is just a movie scenario of a rubbish removalist.
