Why Seeking to Better Yourself Is Holding You Back

You do good work in this world, though you find it hard to admit it and even harder to communicate and convey it powerfully. You are starting to turn the corner with being able to devote time and head-space to the important work, but it still feels like most of the time you’re dealing with stuff at about the same pace as it lands at your feet — sometimes a bit more, sometimes a bit less.

You feel limited by yourself, and so you do a lot to better yourself. You buy books. You even read some of them. You know there’s no magic pill, no secret, but if you really admit it, that feeling that the next piece of learning will provide that simple but powerful idea that has big impact.

You know the importance of coaches and mentors, because you don’t know what you don’t know, but there simply isn’t the additional cash to invest. You are always seeking to better yourself, and this is entirely admirable, if not just a little off-centre.

That feeling you can’t get rid of that there is a simple but powerful idea that will have gigantic impact is because there is. But it’s not what you think. And it’s the one that’s so apparent, it’s like looking all around the house for the thing you lost, except the place that “it really can’t be”, because it’s the most obvious place, and you’ve kind of already checked there.

But then you search everywhere else, top to bottom, and it’s not there. So, reluctantly and without much hope, you go back to the first place you looked, the obvious place “it really can’t be”. And it was there all along.

That place is you. More specifically, it’s understanding yourself. Who you are. This is different to your why. Your why is only part of your who.

It’s time to stop seeking to better yourself, or at least put it on hold. This better understanding OF yourself is the thing that is going to give you disproportionate impact, and banish that drubbing feeling that the only thing getting in your way is you.
