The joint damage caused by the ocean toward the ship is corrosion. As you may already know, the propeller is permanently submerged in the water to make the vessel forward using Newton’s third law of motion. Along with the propeller, the pipes potentially transporting fuel and coolant throughout the ship get corroded. This happens because they come in contact with sea water or the air containing seawater’s ions.

The standard solution that has been popular recently is that the fasteners are made of stainless steel to hold the ship’s mechanical components for a long time. They can withstand the strain caused by the impact of seawater.

But to achieve this, the alloy should have at least 10.5% of chromium in it. One can find fasteners suffering from pitting, cracking, and stress corrosion by choosing incorrect quality stainless steel. Authentic grade quality of stainless steel to use above sea level should be 1.4401, 1.4404, or 1.4542. And for the submerged section A4 or 316 grade with a minimum of 6% molybdenum in the alloy is mandatory.
