Remembering Genevieve Comeau

A Life Devoted to Others

From a young age, Genevieve Comeau’s strength, intelligence, and determination drove her to excel in school. She graduated Cum Laude from the University of Florida. Afterward, she immediately moved to Tucson and began a doctorate in Entomology at the University of Arizona, as a Carson and NSF Fellow.

Genevieve was a few months away from finishing her doctorate in Entomology.

The first was her work. Genevieve studied how the zika virus spread between mosquito generations, and ran scientific models to predict outbreak. She sought to help humanity avert a potentially devastating spread of disease.

The second way was helping her friends and family grow.

Genevieve could make anyone feel like they could do anything. Her own will to succeed inspired others to do the same. She had a knack for making people feel like they were squarely in the center of the universe when she spoke to them. Even strangers felt like long lost friends when they met her. Armed with an erudite mind, incisive wit, and thoughtful questions, she could relate to most anyone.

Her interests were innumerable. From art, to film, the cosmos, science fiction, science non-fiction, music, antique ephemera, aesthetic beauty in nature, real estate, novels, travel, and shows, she cherished fulfilling conversation. These topics, however, were mere tools for Genevieve. She used them as devices to tell her friends that she was thinking of them, and that she loved them.

Genevieve had remarkable grit. She never missed an opportunity to lend it to others who underestimated their own talent.

While rock climbing, for instance, she pushed her friends past their own perceived mental and physical boundaries. She sometimes refused to lower her climbing partners when they were ready to give up. She’d shake her head, and tell them she wasn’t in a rush to be anywhere soon. Often, they found the strength to scale the entire course. With a smile, she would say she knew better than to listen to them at the first sign of physical strain.

She celebrated everything her friends built, created, or accomplished, and then motivated us to go further. Whether our goal was professional, personal or athletic, she cheered us on every opportunity she could.

Her wish was to see each of us realize our dreams, and she was at her happiest when we exceeded our expectations and set new personal records. Never one to allow complacency, Genevieve was a roaring wind at our backs.

She had no patience for pretension or insincerity, relishing when her friends were true to who they were. Genevieve eschewed social convention. The freer we danced, the happier she was.

She cherished dialogue about the human condition. The fleeting, ephemeral nature of existence was almost always top of mind for Genevieve. It was her belief that we should live freely, and she savored discourse about the meaning of it all. Asked whether she believed in an afterlife, she said that we know little about the real mechanics of our existence. Ever the open-minded scientist, she reasoned there was more truth yet to discover and left room for many possibilities. She warmly embraced the unknown.

Genevieve had a profound impact in her short 25 years among us. Her enduring influence drives us to push forward, to keep climbing, and to live our lives as our most authentic, unabashed selves.

We miss you, Genevieve Comeau.

So much.
